• This goes way back to the year 1998. Tata Motors wanted to enter the market of passenger car so they established an assembly line in Maharashtra and soon launched their first car Tata Indica.

(It was a supermini class car and was India's first indigenously developed passenger car.)

• Being new to this business Tata Motors manufactured a large number of cars at its first assembly and unfortunately it proved to be a flop project.
• The team of Tata Motors advised Ratan Tata to sell their passenger car company and he agreed to do so.
• He proposed Ford to buy their passenger car company and Ford also showed interest in their proposal.
• Ratan Tata along with his team went to Detroit ( Ford's HQ) for the meeting to fix deal in 1999.
• Bill Ford, the chairman of Ford Group said “YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING, WHY DID YOU START THE PASSENGER CAR DIVISION. WE WILL DO YOU A FAVOUR BY BUY YOUR CAR DIVISION.”
• This humiliated Mr Tata and he returned to New York the same evening by cancelling deal with Ford.
• Ratan Tata and his team decided to work hard to overcome this humiliation and that day came after a period of 10 years.
• Tata got a huge success in this field later and in 2008 the Luxury Car Brand Jaguar and Land Rover were sold to Ratan Tata because Ford were on the edge of being bankrupt.
• The same Bill Ford again said “YOU ARE DOING A BIG FAVOUR FOR US BY BUYING JAGUAR LAND ROVER.”
