If you want to improve your concentration and willpower in the short term, you have to follow steps that will help you in the long term.
A unique example of this is John D. Rockefeller; probably the most famous businessman in the 19th century.
It was his willpower that earned him that title. But what made John different from the other people in the world back then?
John D. Rockefeller internalized the Move Quickly framework, something that allowed him to bloom into one of the most productive but also intelligent people known today.
  1. By moving quickly, Rockefeller was able to grow as a person
It was during the mid 19th century that John D. Rockefeller truly started going after what he believed was important. He was only 20 when he started his first business venture.
This was six years after he started working - back at that time it wasn’t strange for 14-year-olds to start working.
In his first six years, he gained a lot of knowledge, allowing him to start his first business at the age of 20. Even back then, starting a business wasn’t just an ordinary step to take.
But he believed that he was at the right age and knew enough to start this business. He didn’t wait. He didn’t just sit down at his desk wondering whether he should do it.
Instead, he took the necessary steps.
Often in life, we encounter situations in which we are wondering whether we should take a specific step.
By wondering, we allow our minds to think of a lot of obstacles on why we shouldn’t do it. This is why the Move Quickly framework is important for our concentration and willpower.
These obstacles are a distraction. We talk ourselves down, thinking of reasons why we shouldn’t do it.
But if we think of something and actually move quickly, the concentration and willpower will immediately follow. We won’t think about why we shouldn’t do it, we just do it.
This framework led to a revenue of $450,000 just in the first year (when he was just 21)
2. By moving quickly, he understood a lot more about the market
The 1860s were a great time for oil.
While most of the world was looking the other way, John D. Rockefeller saw a new opportunity.
He believed that by opening his own oil refinery, he would be able to grow his business even quicker.
By the age of 24, he decided to open an oil refinery. See, again, he didn’t wait until the time was right, until he felt like the stars were aligned. He just did it. And he was one of the youngest people of his time to do this.
Because John moved quickly, he learned a lot about the market. He would get himself into situations that allowed him to gain more knowledge about the market.
Rather than sitting down reading books for years, he just did it. Again, he didn’t wait until his concentration was on point or he had enough willpower. He just did it, which helped him get the much-needed concentration and willpower.
Surprisingly, by the time he turned 26, his oil refinery was now the largest refinery in the area. Something his competitors, who often were at least 10 years older than John, didn’t manage to do.
Now, even if you don’t aspire to build a large business, it is still important to just get yourself into situations that can teach you a lot.
The Move Quickly framework is perfect for this. Rather than hoping the knowledge will come to you, you go out and find ways to acquire the knowledge quicker.
This leads to a better understanding of how it works, allowing you to grow within the fields that you want to grow in.
Often in life, we think we are not prepared enough to do something. Guess what, you’ll never be prepared enough to really do it unless you start doing it. You will learn most of the things in life after you start going after it, not before you do it,
3. By moving quickly, he took over most of the market
When John D. Rockefeller turned 31, he started Standard Oil along with several fellow associates.
Again, the company was built using the Move Quickly framework. Even before the company was up and running for two years, they took over most of the oil industry in that region.
Realizing this framework worked so well, they went on to acquire a ton of competitors and companies within the oil market.
By the time the company was 10 years old, they owned almost the entire US oil market. Imagine that, even today it’s hard to dominate a market entirely and even in a timespan of 10 years it’s almost impossible.
But the company still did it simply because they moved so quickly.
Again, John D. Rockefeller and his associates didn’t wait until the time was right. They didn’t wait until people came to them to make deals. They went out to sign new contracts themselves, they pushed every single day to build a bigger company.
Which just shows that if you truly want to find the perfect concentration in life and get the willpower to reach your goals, it is important to get out there yourself, to move quickly in order to get the things in life you think you deserve.
